Ziereisen "Jaspis Unterirdisch" Roter Gutedel 2020
Mashed by feet, buried underground, aged for 2 years — an absolutely crazy wine.
Grape Varietals & Region: The rare Roter Gutedel grape variety, from Baden, Germany, fermented entirely on the skins in the style of an orange wine.
Taste Profile: Rust red to orange in colour. A deep, clearly vegetal nose, also mushroomy, yeasty and slightly wilted floral, with earthy, faintly tobacco-like, nutty and restrained yellow-fruit aromas. Tight and very tart on the palate, with cool fruit, plenty of yeast, mushroomy and chalky tones, very fine acidity, lots of grip from crumbly tannins, floral nuances, white pepper and citrus zest in the background. Still very young and gains freshness with air, finishing very firm, tart and cool with spicy tones and a fine bite.
Winemaking Process: "Unterirdisch" ("underground") is mashed with the feet in the vineyard, then spontaneously fermented as whole berries in an amphora buried in the vineyard, ageing there for 12 months with no intervention. It's then pressed and matures a further 12 months in barrique before bottling, with no additional sulphur, fining or filtration.
Winemaker: Hanspeter Ziereisen founded his eponymous estate in Efringen-Kirchen, Baden in 1991, converting from a career in carpentry to take over his parents' small mixed farm and half-hectare of vines, largely teaching himself winemaking by doing. Alongside his wife Edeltraut, he built the estate into one of Baden's most celebrated and rebellious producers, farming around 21 hectares of Pinot Noir, Gutedel, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Muscat, Gewürztraminer and Syrah. His Gutedel bottling "10 hoch 4" (Jaspis) became the first Gutedel ever to score 100 points from Gault&Millau, in 2015, and his children Ida and Johann now help carry the family's stylistic, rule-breaking approach forward.

Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
