Mencia
Mencia is considered one of the indigenous grape varieties of Spain, and its renaissance as a quality wine grape began in the late 20th century. Today, Mencia is gaining popularity both in Spain and internationally for its distinctive flavors and versatility, and is often compared to Pinot Noir for its elegant and expressive style
Varietal Origin: Mencia is a red grape variety that is believed to have originated in the northwestern region of Spain, particularly in the Bierzo and Galicia regions. It is also grown in other parts of Spain, as well as in Portugal.
Typical Taste Profile: Mencia wines are known for their vibrant red fruit flavors, such as cherry and raspberry, with hints of floral and earthy notes. They are typically medium-bodied with moderate tannins and acidity, and can exhibit both freshness and complexity. Mencia wines can range from elegant and aromatic to more structured and concentrated, depending on the winemaking style and terroir.
Regional Styles: Mencia is primarily associated with the Bierzo region in Spain, where it is used to produce red wines with distinctive character. Bierzo Mencia wines are known for their freshness, balance, and purity of fruit flavors. In Galicia, Mencia is also used to produce red wines with a lighter, more delicate style. Additionally, Mencia is also grown in other regions of Spain, such as Valdeorras and Ribeira Sacra, as well as in Portugal's Dão region.
