Regional History & Terroir

Winemaking in South Korea is relatively young, with meaningful development beginning in the late 20th century. While traditionally known for beverages like makgeolli and soju, Korea’s modern wine industry has been expanding steadily, driven by small producers and increasing domestic interest in wine culture.

The country’s terroir is defined by a humid continental to monsoon climate, with hot, wet summers and cold winters, which presents challenges such as disease pressure and vineyard management. As a result, many vineyards are located in areas with good drainage and airflow, including regions like Yeongcheon (Gyeongsangbuk-do), Yeongdong (Chungcheongbuk-do), and parts of Gangwon Province. Soils vary but often include sandy loam and granite-based compositions, contributing to lighter, fresher wine styles

Typical Grape Varietals: Due to climatic challenges, South Korea relies heavily on hybrid and adapted grape varieties:

Campbell Early – The most widely planted grape, producing light, fruity, aromatic wines with strawberry and candy-like notes
Kyoho – A table grape also used in winemaking, yielding juicy, grapey wines
Muscat Bailey A – A Japanese hybrid, producing soft, fruit-forward reds
Chungsoo – Grown experimentally in cooler areas for more classic wine styles
Vidal Blanc – Used for both dry and icewine-style wines

Regional Wine Styles

Light, Fruity Reds – Often made from Campbell Early or Muscat Bailey A, with low tannins, bright acidity, and pronounced grapey aromatics
Fresh Whites – Crisp, simple styles with citrus and floral notes, sometimes slightly off-dry
Fruit Wines – A major category in Korea, including wines made from persimmon, plum (maesil), apple, and peach, often aromatic and approachable
Icewine-Style Wines – Produced in colder inland regions using Vidal or hybrids, offering sweetness balanced by acidity
