Super Tuscans
Super Tuscans emerged in the 1970s in Tuscany, Italy, as an innovative and rebellious response to the restrictive Italian wine classification system. Winemakers defied traditional DOC regulations by blending international grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with native Sangiovese, or by creating wines entirely from non-traditional grapes.
The Big 5 Super Tuscans are Sassicaia by Tenuta San Guido, Tignanello & Solaia by Antinori, Ornellaia and Masseto who pioneered the category, but there are many more winemakers producing this style today
Taste Profile: Super Tuscans are celebrated for their bold, opulent, and polished profiles. They often showcase a harmonious blend of dark fruit flavors such as black cherry, blackberry, and plum, alongside layers of tobacco, cedar, chocolate, and herbs. The international grape varieties contribute structure, depth, and aging potential, while Sangiovese, when included, adds bright acidity, red fruit, and earthy undertones. These wines are typically full-bodied with firm tannins and well-integrated oak influence.
Global Influence: Although quintessentially Tuscan, the success of Super Tuscans inspired winemakers globally to experiment with unorthodox blends and challenge traditional wine laws. Their popularity has particularly influenced regions like California, Australia, and Argentina, where bold blends of international varietals are crafted with local character. Super Tuscans remain a symbol of innovation and excellence, recognized as some of the finest wines in the world.
