Port wine, a fortified treasure from the Douro Valley in Portugal, is renowned for its rich, complex flavours and velvety texture. This historic wine, traditionally enjoyed as a digestif, has captivated palates for centuries with its diverse styles, ranging from ruby red and fruit-forward to tawny and nutty. Explore our curated collection of Port wines and discover the captivating world of this Portuguese icon.
Port wine comes in a fascinating array of styles, each with its own unique character and ageing process. Here's a glimpse into the diverse world of Port:
- Ruby Port: The youngest style of Port, bursting with vibrant red fruit flavours and a youthful exuberance.
- Tawny Port: Aged in oak barrels for extended periods, Tawny Port develops a complex tapestry of nutty, caramel, and dried fruit notes.
- Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Port: A single-vintage Port aged for 4-6 years in oak, offering a balance of fruit and complexity.
- Vintage Port: The most prestigious style of Port, produced only in exceptional years and aged for decades in bottle, developing incredible depth and complexity.
- White Port: A lesser-known gem, White Port is made from white grapes and can range from dry and crisp to sweet and nutty.
Port wines are renowned for their rich, concentrated flavours, often showcasing a symphony of ripe berries, dark chocolate, spices, and nutty notes. The addition of brandy during fermentation not only fortifies the wine, increasing its alcohol content but also halts the fermentation process, resulting in a range of sweetness levels, from off-dry to lusciously sweet. The ageing process further enhances the complexity of Port, with Tawny Ports developing nutty and caramel notes, while Vintage Ports evolve into a tapestry of dried fruit, spice, and chocolate.
