Moldova

Moldova, a small landlocked country in Eastern Europe, is an emerging wine region with a rich winemaking tradition, diverse grape varietals, and a focus on both quality and quantity.

Regional History & Terroir: Moldova has a long history of winemaking that dates back over 5,000 years. The region benefits from a continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters, and diverse terroir, including fertile plains, rolling hills, and limestone-rich soils. The country's unique position between the Carpathian Mountains and the Black Sea contributes to the development of distinct flavors and characteristics in its wines. It's reputation for wine has been tainted by the USSR period, where it was producing much of the state's table wine production. Now that it's separated, many winemakers are focusing on producing quality wines.

Typical Grape Varietals: Moldova is known for its wide range of indigenous and international grape varietals. Indigenous white varietals include Feteasca Alba, Feteasca Regala, while indigenous red varietals include Feteasca NeagraRara Neagra and Saperavi. International varietals such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are also cultivated in Moldova. Much of the indigeneous varietals are shared with Romania.

Regional Wine Styles: Moldova produces a variety of wine styles, including both still and sparkling wines. White wines are often aromatic with crisp acidity, showcasing flavors of orchard fruits, citrus, and floral notes. Red wines range from light and fruity to full-bodied and complex, with flavors of red berries, plums, and spice. Moldova is also renowned for its production of dessert wines, particularly those made from grapes affected by noble rot. Stefan Voda is commonly regarded as the premium winemaking region, which also has some of the longest cultivation history in Moldova

Moldova has a well-established wine industry, with many wineries embracing modern winemaking techniques while preserving traditional methods. The country's winemakers focus on producing quality wines, often with a good price-to-quality ratio. Moldova's wine cellars, some of which are carved into limestone hillsides, offer unique and immersive wine tasting experiences. With its rich winemaking heritage and commitment to quality, Moldova is an exciting destination for wine lovers looking to explore wines from this re-emerging wine region.
