Burn Cottage Moonlight Race Pinot Noir 2022
Named for a century-old water channel that once carried gold-rush water down from the Pisa Range.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Pinot Noir, from two of Burn Cottage's biodynamic estate vineyards: Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn and Sauvage Vineyard in Bannockburn, both northeast-facing sites at the south end of the Pisa Range in the Cromwell Basin, Central Otago, New Zealand. The name "Moonlight Race" refers to one of the historic water channels, or "races," dug by early European settlers to carry water down from the Pisa Mountain Range, one of which still runs through the Burn Cottage property.
Taste Profile: Fresh red cherries and ripe dark berries fill the nose, layered with wild herbs, autumnal earth and black tea spice. The dry, medium-to-full-bodied palate is elegant and delicate, with bright acidity and mellow, fine tannins carrying red cherries and plums, juicy summer berries, freshly rubbed thyme, dried lavender and hints of cedar through to a long finish.
Winemaking Process: Burn Cottage farms biodynamically, working the vineyard according to moon phases. After indigenous fermentation, the wine ages 12 months in French oak barriques, 25% new, with no filtering before bottling to preserve the character of the grape.
Winemaker: Burn Cottage was founded in 2002, when American businessman Marquis Sauvage and his wife Dianne bought a 24-hectare sheep farm at the foot of the Pisa Range in the Cromwell Basin, having toured the area on holiday the season before. The property had never grown grapes; the first vines went in the ground in 2003, developed from the outset in partnership with California winemaker Ted Lemon of Littorai Wines, whose expertise in biodynamic farming and minimal-intervention winemaking still shapes the estate today. Current winemaker and general manager Claire Mulholland continues that biodynamic, Pinot-focused philosophy in close consultation with Lemon.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
