Rondo
Rondo is a hybrid grape variety that was created by Professor V. Kraus at the Research Institute of Viticulture and Enology in Perná, Czech Republic. It is a cross between St. Laurent and Zarya Severa.
Taste Profile: Wines made from Rondo grapes are known for their deep color and a rich, fruity profile. The flavor characteristics often include dark berry fruits like blackberry and black cherry, sometimes accompanied by spicy and herbal notes. Rondo wines typically have good acidity and moderate tannins.
Regional Styles: Rondo is well-suited to cool-climate regions, and it has found success in various wine-producing countries with such climates. It is grown in parts of Central and Eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Germany. In the United Kingdom, it has been used in the production of red wines and is known for its ability to ripen reliably in the country's cooler conditions.
Interesting Fact: Rondo has gained popularity in organic and biodynamic viticulture due to its disease resistance and ability to thrive with minimal chemical interventions.
Rondo's adaptability to cooler climates and its disease-resistant qualities make it a valuable grape variety in regions where traditional vinifera varieties might face challenges. The grape has contributed to the production of quality red wines in areas that were not traditionally associated with red wine production.
