Red Wine

Ever been told to bring a bottle of red wine to a party, and be flabbergasted when looking at the wine aisle in a specialty store or supermarket? Well, you're not alone, and to be honest, it's not easy to seek out the "right" bottle. There are many different red grape varietals out there, but the easiest way to categorise them would be based on whether the wine is light, medium or full-bodied.

Frequently Asked Questions About Red Wine

The "best" red wine is ultimately a matter of personal preference, as each palate is unique. However, some popular and versatile options include Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz, and Grenache. These varietals offer a range of flavour profiles and can be enjoyed on various occasions. At BoundbyWine, we encourage you to explore different red wines to discover your personal favourites. Our team is always ready to offer recommendations based on your taste preferences.

While there are countless red wine varietals, five commonly considered internationally recognised red wines are:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon: Known for its bold tannins, blackcurrant flavours, and ability to age.
  • Merlot: Offers softer tannins and flavours of plum, cherry, and chocolate.
  • Pinot Noir: Delicate and elegant, with notes of red fruit, spice, and earth.
  • Syrah/Shiraz: Full-bodied and spicy, with flavours of blackberry, pepper, and smoke.
  • Grenache: Produces juicy and fruit-forward wines with notes of strawberry, raspberry, and spice.

These five varietals offer a great starting point for exploring the world of red wine.

For beginners, we recommend starting with red wines that are fruit-forward, approachable, and have softer tannins. Some good options include Pinot Noir, Grenache, Beaujolais, and Zinfandel. These wines are easy to drink, offering a pleasant introduction to the world of red wine.

When shopping for red wine, consider these factors:

  • Your taste preferences: Do you prefer bold or subtle flavours, high or low tannins?
  • The occasion: Are you pairing the wine with food or enjoying it on its own?
  • Your budget: Red wines are available at various price points, so set a budget and explore options within your range.
  • The region and grape variety: Experiment with different regions and varietals to discover your favourites.

While red wines do contain acidity, they are generally less acidic than white wines. This lower acidity contributes to their smoother, fuller-bodied mouthfeel. However, the level of acidity can vary depending on the grape variety, region, and winemaking techniques. Some red wines, like Barbera or Sangiovese, can be more noticeably acidic, while others, like Malbec or Merlot, tend to be more mellow.

While most red wines are dry, some offer a touch of sweetness. Look for terms like "off-dry," "semi-sweet," or "dessert wine" on the label. Popular sweet red wines include Port, Lambrusco, and certain Zinfandels. Remember, sweetness is a matter of personal preference, so explore and find what delights your palate!
