Merlot

Originating in Bordeaux, the first official mention of Merlot was in 1784 when French wine officials noted how good Merlot from the Right Bank was. Merlot also gained significant popularity in the 1990s, particularly in the United States, due to its smooth and approachable style. However, it has also been the subject of controversy, with some critics arguing that it can be overly simplistic or lacking in complexity. Nevertheless, Merlot remains a widely planted and popular grape variety, appreciated for its versatility and ability to produce a diverse range of wines. Ready to fall in love with Merlot? Varietal Origin: Right Bank Bordeaux

Merlot is a red grape variety that is believed to have originated in the Bordeaux region of France, where it is one of the most widely planted grape varieties. In fact, its name is thought to be derived from "merle," the French word for blackbird, possibly alluding to the grape's dark colour or the birds' fondness for its sweet fruit.

In Bordeaux, Merlot has a long and storied history, playing a crucial role in some of the world's most renowned and expensive wines. It is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, adding softness and fruitiness to the final blend. Now grown in many wine regions around the world, including Italy, the United States, Chile, Australia, and others, Merlot continues to captivate wine lovers with its approachable style and diverse expressions.
