"The protected one" — aged in chestnut wood the old Basque way, before oak ever arrived in the region
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Hondarrabi Zuri, from Juanjo Tellaetxe's family vineyards in Artomaña, Arrastaria Valley, in the Arabako Txakolina DO, Basque Country, Spain. The wine's name, "La Protegida" ("the protected one"), refers both to the chestnut's natural shell and to the wine's own journey — gently crafted, protected from noise and haste, and aged in the wood species traditionally used in the area before oak became widespread
Taste Profile: In the glass, La Protegida shows a tall, straw-yellow colour — clear and luminous. The aroma carries medium to high intensity, with notes of ripe fruit and a discreet hint of menthol, elegantly melting together with sweet brioche and vanilla notes derived from the chestnut barrel and the lees. A more textured, structured expression of Hondarrabi Zuri than Tantaka's standard Blanco — the chestnut ageing lends real depth without sacrificing the variety's natural lift
Winemaking Process: The grapes are gently pressed in a horizontal pneumatic press with a yield of 58%, and the must ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in a new 650-litre chestnut barrel. The wine is then aged for 12 months on the lees with gentle bâtonnage, which gives both depth and structure — without taking away the wine's natural lightness. This chestnut-barrel approach is a deliberate nod to regional history, predating the widespread use of oak in the area

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
