Château Palmer Alter Ego de Palmer 2017

Château Palmer Alter Ego de Palmer is precise, without excess. Very deep purple-black colour. Complex and aromatic nose of violets, cherries, leather and forest floor notes. The dry and medium-bodied palate has plush velvety tannins, crisp acidity and a plummy fruit core. Flavours of fresh black plums, mulberries, cherries and red currants are touched by dark chocolate and forest floor nuances.

Ageing potential: Promises splendid ageing potential. Drink now or keep until 2035.

53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot. The fruit comes from Château Palmer's biodynamic vineyards in the Margaux appellation of Bordeaux, France: 66 hectares of gravelly soil and grassy rows overlook the Gironde estuary.

Fermentation takes place in conical, stainless steel vats in varying sizes, to permit each variety and parcel to be fermented separately for subsequent selection and blending. Ages for up to 20 months in barrel, of which less than 50% is new.

"The nose is fruity, juicy and offers gourmandize, a beautiful finesse of the grain as well as concentration. It reveals notes of redcurrant and small notes of blackberry associated with very fine hints of tonka bean, spices as well as a small flowery side, a hint of cardamom, liquorice and a very discreet hint of tea. The mouth is fruity, juicy, fresh, well-balanced and offers an acidulous/juicy frame, a good definition, unctuosity, finesse as well as gourmandize. In the mouth this wine expresses notes of juicy blackberry, crunchy/juicy strawberry, juicy redcurrant and small notes of raspberry associated with fine hints of tonka bean, spices as well as a discreet hint of tea and an imperceptible hint of pepper (in the background). Tannins are elegant. Good length."

"This shows excellent body and depth of fruit. Rich and very deep. Layered and flavorful. Solid and chewy. Serious second wine."

"A blend of 53% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Alter Ego de Palmer is very deep purple-black in color and gives up exuberant crushed red currants, red cherries, black plums and mulberries with touches of forest floor, garrigue and lavender plus a waft of dark chocolate. The palate is medium-bodied with a good core of plummy fruit and very soft, plush tannins, sparked by just enough freshness, finishing fruity." — Lisa Perrotti-Brown.

"Attractive black-currant aromas of this wine are followed on the palate by fresh fruits, lit by acidity and bright black-currant and berry flavors. The tannins are soft and open, meaning this wine will develop relatively quickly. Drink from 2022."

"Deep dark ruby garnet, violet reflections, delicate lightening of the edges, ripe plums, some nougat and herbs, smoky, nuances of blackberry fruit. Good complexity, black cherries, integrated, ripe tannins, mineral notes, good freshness, balanced, sweet cherries in the aftertaste, good accompaniment to food of medium length."
