Cakebread Cellars Chardonnay 2023
The very wine that started this family winery, still grown on the same cool bay-cooled ground nearly 50 years later.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Chardonnay, from the Carneros appellation in southern Napa Valley, California, just north of San Pablo Bay. The bay's influence brings cool, windswept conditions that give the fruit an ideal balance of concentration and acidity, on predominantly Haire Loam soils that naturally regulate vine vigour.
Taste Profile: Aromas of ripe golden apple, white peach and light oak open the wine. Apple and pear characteristics are balanced by fresh acidity on the palate, closing clean with hints of apple and lemon intermingling with minerality. A versatile pairing wine with grilled seafood and most cheeses.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are harvested at night in small batches while still cool from evening temperatures, then pressed directly in the tank as whole clusters. The juice ferments in French oak barrels, with 4% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation. The wine ages 8 months in French oak, 33% new, with intermittent lees stirring to build texture and complexity.
Winemaker: Cakebread Cellars was founded in 1973 by Jack and Dolores Cakebread, who met in high school in Oakland and married in 1950. Jack, then running his father's car repair business and moonlighting as a photographer who'd studied under Ansel Adams, was in Napa Valley in 1972 shooting a coffee-table book on American wine when he made a casual offer to buy a friend's 22-acre Rutherford ranch — using his $2,500 photography advance as the down payment. The couple spent evenings and weekends planting vines, selling 157 cases of their first wine, a 1973 Chardonnay, the following year. The winery remains family-run today under sons Bruce and Dennis Cakebread.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
