Momento Mori Rack & Ruin 2021
Two standout wines, made and aged completely separately, that turned into something better the moment they ended up in the same glass.
Grape Varietals & Region: Roughly 70% Ribolla Gialla and 30% Nero d'Avola, both grown in the rocky volcanic soils of Mt Camel, Heathcote, Victoria — among the only Ribolla Gialla plantings in Australia, and likely one of the first releases of the variety in the country. The two wines were made and aged separately in stainless steel, intended as standalone releases from an exceptional 2021 vintage, until winemaker Dane Johns kept finding himself drinking them side by side straight from the tank.
Taste Profile: Drinks like a light red or a dark rosé, and should be served chilled. Stellar on multiple levels — the kind of blend that only reveals itself by accident, where the whole genuinely outperforms the sum of its parts.
Winemaking Process: Both components ferment and age separately, 100% in stainless steel, with small ferments, wild yeast, no new oak, no mechanical pumps, no fining, no filtration and no additions at any stage — including sulphur. The final blend was only decided after both wines were already finished.
Winemaker: Momento Mori is the project of winemaker Dane Johns, who describes his approach simply: "I'm just trying to make wines as pure and as clean as I can, without adding anything at all. That includes sulphur. I kind of like the constraints of not using sulphur — I guess it's like farming organically, it instantly ensures you can only do things gently and in small batches." He farms his own Heathcote plantings alongside fruit from a small circle of similarly minded organic growers across Victoria, and Rack & Ruin — born from tank-side tasting rather than a plan — is as good an example as any of how that philosophy plays out.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
