Welschriesling off Eisenberg's green-schist slopes near Rechnitz — one of the region's newest DAC categories, only added in 2022.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Welschriesling from green-schist (Grünschiefer) sites on the Eisenberg near Rechnitz in Südburgenland — some of the best terrain in the appellation for the variety.
Eisenberg DAC only extended its rules to allow vineyard-designated Welschriesling starting with the 2022 vintage, making this a genuinely new category for a region that's spent decades building its reputation almost entirely on Blaufränkisch. Weinhof Szemes, run by siblings Anna and Oscar Szemes, has been a family wine business since the early 1900s.
Taste Profile: The racy, mineral-driven style typical of green-schist Welschriesling from this corner of Burgenland — bright citrus and orchard fruit over a distinctly stony backbone, dry and taut rather than broad. Clear pale yellow color; on the nose green
apple, grassy notes and subtle citrus fruit. On the palate fresh acidity, a lean to medium-bodied wine with long-lasting minerality. A good match for a simple grilled fish or a plate of soft cheese.
Winemaking Process: 24 hours of gentle skin contact, fermented in large oak casks, aged 4 months in oak and 9 months in stainless steel to balance texture and freshness. Fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness and the site's mineral character, in keeping with the region's typical approach to green-schist Welschriesling.
Winemaker: Anna and Oscar Szemes are putting the same site-first attention into this relatively new Eisenberg DAC category that their family has spent generations applying to Blaufränkisch — proof that Grünschiefer soil doesn't just make good red wine.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
