Umbria, Italy
Umbria is a landlocked region in central Italy, located south of Tuscany. The climate in Umbria is generally continental, with cold winters and hot summers. The hilly landscape and fertile soils of Umbria provide ideal growing conditions for grape varieties such as Sangiovese, Sagrantino, and Trebbiano.
Umbria is best known for its red wines made from the Sagrantino grape, which is indigenous to the region. These wines are rich and full-bodied, with high tannins and intense flavors of dark fruit and spices. Other popular red wines from Umbria include Rosso di Montefalco and Torgiano Rosso, both of which are made primarily from Sangiovese grapes.
White wines from Umbria are also noteworthy, with Trebbiano and Grechetto being the most commonly planted grape varieties. These wines are typically crisp and refreshing, with flavors of citrus and green apple. Orvieto, a white wine made from a blend of Trebbiano and Grechetto grapes, is one of the most famous wines from the region. It is known for its delicate floral aromas and bright acidity.
