A former anthropology student and filmmaker fell for natural wine, then started his own domaine with nothing but a pruner and two hectares of vines.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Grolleau from two plots in the Loire Valley, France: La Grande Rue in Rablay-sur-Layon and Caseneuve in Champ-sur-Layon, the latter planted in 1970. The plots sit on a riverbed between the Britannic and Parisian continental plates, giving a wide range of soils — clay, blue schist, quartz, and degraded, eroded schist.
Taste Profile: Notes of red berries and a hint of spice — a fine, fresh Grolleau that's dangerously easy to keep drinking.
Winemaking Process: Hand harvested. Half the grapes macerate as whole bunches for 3 days with no pumping over or cap punching; the other half are pressed directly. No clarification, and no additional inputs of any kind. Fermentation, including full natural malolactic, and maturation on lees all take place in stainless steel over 12 months. Bottled without filtration.
Winemaker: Thomas Batardière studied anthropology and worked as a filmmaker before natural wine pulled him in around 2008; he trained as a sommelier, then apprenticed under Mathieu Vallée at Château Yvonne in Saumur while taking a viticulture course in Beaune. In 2012 he started his own project in Rablay-sur-Layon with nothing but a pruner and two hectares of vines — no cellar, no house, no tractor — practising biodynamics from day one and earning Demeter certification with his 2015 vintage.

Thomas Batardière swapped filmmaking for winemaking, apprenticed under Mathieu Vallée, then in 2012 struck out alone in Rablay-sur-Layon. Farms ~4 biodynamic hectares (Demeter since 2015), making wild-yeast, low-sulfite Chenin and Grolleau.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
