Varietal Origin
Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, specifically in the Northern Rhône region. But why the double name? While the French call it "Syrah," Aussies adopted "Shiraz" back in the 19th century, possibly inspired by the ancient Persian city famed for its vineyards. And the grape itself? DNA testing reveals Syrah is a descendant of two lesser-known French grapes, Dureza and Mondeuse Blanche, giving it a unique character that thrives in diverse climates.
Typical Taste Profile
Syrah wines typically exhibit flavours of dark fruits such as blackberry, blackcurrant, and plum, along with notes of spices, pepper, and smoked meat. They can range from medium to full-bodied, with moderate to high tannins, and often display good ageing potential.
