Meyer-Näkel "Grauwacke" Spätburgunder 2019
A German Pinot Noir estate that dared to make dry red wine when the rest of the country insisted red had to be sweet.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Pinot Noir from the Ahr Valley, Germany, off steep, south-facing vineyard slopes formed from weathered slate and greywacke that warm quickly and store heat, giving the grapes ideal ripening conditions.
Taste Profile: Pale ruby red, with a floral nose of bright red fruit married to darker cherry notes. Firmly structured yet elegant and gentle, with a taut acid backbone running through the mid-palate for a fresh, clean finish — a marriage of Burgundian finesse with forward-thinking, modern winemaking.
Winemaking Process: Barrique-aged in old barrels for 10 months.
Winemaker: The estate takes its name from the 1950 marriage of grandparents Paula Meyer and Willibald Näkel, who farmed just 1.5 hectares but made a name for themselves through Willibald's dry red wines, genuinely pioneering work in an era when German wine was expected to always be sweet. Werner Näkel took over in the 1980s and became one of Germany's most important vintners; today the winery is run by third-generation sisters Meike and Dörte, alongside their parents Werner and Claudia, bringing a fresh take to the Ahr Valley's slate soils and Pinot Noir tradition.

The name of the wine estate goes back to the marriage of grandparents Paula Meyer and Willibald Näkel in 1950. Like many wineries in the Ahr, Meyer-Näkel focuses mainly on Pinot Noir (or as it’s known locally, Spätburgunder).

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
