Ica, Peru
Ica, Peru's principal wine and Pisco-producing region, is celebrated for its rich history, diverse grape varietals, and the iconic Pisco brandy, offering a unique blend of tradition and innovation.
Regional History & Terroir: The Ica Valley has been at the heart of Peruvian viticulture since the 16th century, when Spanish colonizers first introduced grapevines to the region. Located along the southern coast of Peru, Ica benefits from a desert climate tempered by the cooling effects of the Humboldt Current, which creates ideal conditions for grape growing. The terroir is characterized by sandy, alluvial soils that provide excellent drainage, contributing to the distinctive qualities of the region's wines and spirits.
Typical Grape Varietals: Ica is home to a variety of grape varietals used for both wine and Pisco production. Key wine grapes include Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Tannat, and Merlot for reds, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Muscat for whites. For Pisco, notable grape varieties include Quebranta, Negra Criolla, Italia, and Torontel, each contributing unique characteristics to the brandy.
Regional Wine Styles: Ica produces a range of wine styles, from robust, fruit-forward reds with rich flavors and moderate tannins to crisp, aromatic whites with refreshing acidity. The region is particularly renowned for its Pisco, a high-proof grape brandy that is an integral part of Peruvian culture. Pisco can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails, most famously the Pisco Sour, which highlights its versatility and unique flavor profile.
