The first wine Esporão ever made, back in 1985 — before David Baverstock, before 400 hectares, before any of it.
Grape Varietals & Region: A seven-grape blend — Alicante Bouschet, Touriga Nacional, Aragonez, Syrah, Trincadeira, Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Franca — from vines averaging 18 years old, grown on granite and schist soils with a clay-loam structure at Herdade do Esporão in Reguengos de Monsaraz, Alentejo. The label is illustrated by artist Anne Geene, a small detail that matches the wine's status as Esporão's founding release.
Taste Profile: Intense ruby colour. Notes of black fruit jam with spice — black pepper, cloves — combined with coffee bean and cigar box. Complex, with dark chocolate running underneath. Persistent finish.
Winemaking Process: Each variety is harvested and vinified separately, destemmed and crushed, then given a temperature-controlled fermentation split across stainless steel vats, concrete tanks and small marble basins — an unusual mix of vessels even by Alentejo standards. Malolactic fermentation follows in stainless steel, then 12 months ageing in oak barrels, 60% American and 40% French, with a further 8 months resting in bottle before release.
Winemaker: First produced in 1985, seven years before David Baverstock arrived to turn Esporão into a modern winery, Reserva Tinto is the estate's founding wine — the same ambitious, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink blend that put Herdade do Esporão on the map. Baverstock, an Australian winemaker from the Barossa Valley, joined in 1992 and spent close to three decades building on that foundation, bringing New World tools to distinctly Old World Portuguese grapes. Since his retirement, winemaker José Luís Moreira da Silva, who joined the estate in 2015, has led production and carried the wine forward.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
