Kopke Tawny Port NV
A German trading company's side project in 1638 turned into the oldest Port house still standing.
Grape Varietals & Region: A blend of Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cão and Touriga Franca, hand-harvested from traditional Douro terraces in Portugal. Kopke has worked this valley since long before the Douro was formally demarcated in 1756, and the house today is considered the leading producer of Colheita-style Ports.
Taste Profile: Orange-brown in colour, with aromas of vanilla and caramel from oak ageing layered over raisin and fig, plus a hint of hazelnut. The palate is soft, well-balanced and long, with a gentle, rounded sweetness.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are hand-harvested at their best moment, destemmed and crushed, then macerated in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats (28–30°C) with constant pump-overs to extract colour, tannin and aroma. Once the desired sweetness (Baumé) is reached, grape brandy is added to fortify the wine, which is then aged across stainless steel and wood for a minimum of 3 years.
Winemaker: Kopke was founded in 1638 by Nicolau Kopke, a member of the Hanseatic League who moved from Hamburg to Portugal in 1636 as General Consul, initially trading linen, iron and wine rather than making it. The company shipped its first bottles that same year, well over a century before the Douro region was even officially demarcated, and only became a vineyard-owning producer in 1781. In 1922, three centuries after its founding, Kopke purchased Quinta de São Luiz, the estate it still calls the jewel of its portfolio.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
