Varietal Origin

Nebbiolo is a red grape variety that is believed to have originated in the Piedmont region of northern Italy. Its name, derived from the Italian word "nebbia" meaning "fog," evokes the misty autumnal landscapes that blanket the Piedmontese vineyards during harvest time. With its ancient roots and enduring legacy, this varietal is highly prized and esteemed for its ability to produce some of Italy's most renowned and age-worthy wines, such as Barolo and Barbaresco.

But what makes Nebbiolo so special? Its genetic makeup holds the key to its unique character and complexity. Nebbiolo's DNA is distinct from other major grape varieties, contributing to its ability to produce wines with high tannins, vibrant acidity, and a captivating array of aromas and flavours. These characteristics not only make Nebbiolowines exceptionally age-worthy but also contribute to their structure, depth, and ability to express the nuances of their terroir.

Is Nebbiolo a heavy wine?

Nebbiolo wines are generally considered "heavy" in terms of their body and structure. They tend to be full-bodied with a noticeable presence on the palate, thanks to their high tannins and concentrated flavours. However, "heavy" can be subjective, and the perception of weight can also depend on the wine's age and the winemaking style.  Younger Nebbiolos might feel more tannic and astringent, while older vintages can develop a smoother, more velvety texture.

What pairs well with Nebbiolo?

Nebbiolo's high tannins and acidity make it a fantastic food wine, especially when paired with rich, flavourful dishes that can stand up to its intensity. Think hearty meat dishes like roasted lamb, braised beef, or game, as well as mushroom-based pasta or risotto. The tannins in Nebbiolo help to cut through the richness of the food, while the wine's acidity complements fatty flavours. Mature cheeses, such as aged cheddar or Parmesan, also pair beautifully with Nebbiolo.
