Aligote
Aligoté is a white grape variety known for its role in producing crisp and refreshing wines, and it is often overshadowed by its more famous sibling, Chardonnay.
Varietal Origin: Aligoté is believed to have originated in the Burgundy region of France, where it has been cultivated for centuries. It is still widely grown in Burgundy today, particularly in the regions of Bouzeron and Pernand-Vergelesses.
Taste Profile: Aligoté wines are typically light-bodied with high acidity, making them crisp and lively on the palate. They are known for their vibrant citrus flavors, including notes of lemon and green apple, as well as a subtle mineral character. Some examples may exhibit floral and herbal nuances.
Regional Styles: In Burgundy, Aligoté is used to produce both varietal wines and blended wines. It is often blended with Chardonnay to create the famous Kir cocktail, where a splash of crème de cassis is added to a glass of Aligoté wine. The result is a refreshing and aromatic apéritif.
Outside of Burgundy, Aligoté is also grown in other cool-climate wine regions such as Russia, Ukraine, and Romania. These regions often produce Aligoté wines with similar characteristics to those of Burgundy, emphasizing the grape's refreshing acidity and citrus flavors.
While Aligoté may not have the same level of recognition as Chardonnay, it offers wine lovers a delightful alternative with its bright acidity and zesty fruit flavors, making it a great choice for those seeking a refreshing white wine
