Australian Cabernet Shiraz Blend
The Australian Cabernet Shiraz blend is a distinctively Aussie creation, marrying the structure and dark fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness and spice of Shiraz for a full-bodied, age-worthy red.
History & Terroir
Australia’s Cabernet Shiraz blend is a homegrown classic—a uniquely Australian invention that first gained popularity in the mid-20th century, especially after Penfolds’ early experimentation with blending varietals. This blend showcases Australia’s innovative spirit and winemaking freedom, with the best examples coming from Barossa Valley & Coonawarra
The blend ratio can vary, with Cabernet dominating in cooler regions like Coonawarra, and Shiraz taking the lead in Barossa or McLaren Vale for a rounder, riper profile. Some blends include small additions of Merlot or Malbec, but the key character comes from the Cabernet-Shiraz synergy.
You’ll find a range from approachable, juicy everyday reds to iconic collector wines like Penfolds Bin 389 (often dubbed “Baby Grange”), showcasing the blend’s prestige.
