Oxer Kuusu DO Toro 2022
Named after the Basque scarecrow that chases away bad spirits, made from a vineyard planted the year radio broadcasting began.
Grape Varietals & Region: 92% Tinta de Toro (the local Tempranillo clone) and 8% Albillo Mayor, from a 0.9-hectare vineyard in Villabuena del Puente planted in 1920, over 600 metres altitude on sandy, high-quartz soil, yielding just 2,000 kg per hectare. Oxer first tasted Toro wine as a boy over 30 years ago and never forgot the violet aromas — Kuusu is his return to the region where his own wine path began.
Taste Profile: A powerful wine, with punchy freshness and slightly chalky tannins. Flavours of blackcurrant, black cherry, rose petal, dark chocolate and liquorice, with chili spiciness and savoury notes leading into a long, concentrated finish.
Winemaking Process: Fermentation takes place in open wooden vat, foudre and concrete egg using indigenous yeasts. The wine ages approximately 13 months in foudre.
Winemaker: "Kuusu" is the Basque name for a scarecrow — here standing in for the traditional Toro figure believed to ward off bad spirits — and the back label cites John Keats on the poetry of the earth. Oxer Bastegieta built his name on century-old Rioja Alavesa plots, but Kuusu is a personal detour back to the region of his first-ever taste of wine, made with the same minimal-intervention, indigenous-yeast approach he applies everywhere else.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
