Proyecto Garnachas La Fosca Del Priorat 2019
One man's mission to save his great-grandfather's Garnacha vines turned into a rescue project for old Garnacha across Spain.
Grape Varietals & Region: Mostly Garnacha, rounded out with small amounts of Cariñena, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, from a 60-year-old vineyard on the terraced, predominantly slate slopes of El Molar in Priorat, Tarragona, at 310 metres altitude. The wine is part of the 'Proyecto Garnacha de España' collection, a tribute to a variety historically dismissed for being difficult to grow and even harder to sell — until recently, when drinkers started chasing exactly the old-vine character it delivers.
Taste Profile: Intense ruby red with deep edges, its bouquet built on wild strawberry, minerals and a touch of oak. Rich and tasty, with real balance, elegance and harmony — dark cherry and berry flavours mingle with cedar spice, herbs and a 'crushed rock' minerality, while bright acidity keeps it drinkable and leaves a pleasant aftertaste.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are harvested by hand, macerated for two weeks and given a controlled fermentation in stainless steel vats, then aged 10 months in a mix of new and used French oak barrels.
Winemaker: The project is led by Raúl Acha, whose great-grandfather planted Garnacha vines in the village of Cárdenas, La Rioja, back in 1906 — vines that were nearly pulled up by his own father for something more productive. Raúl set out to find other pockets of Spain facing the same threat, and the search led him through Calatayud, the Moncayo and Priorat, gathering the stories of old Garnacha growers along the way. He runs the project alongside CEO Richi Arambarri; both come from Alto Najerilla, the part of La Rioja with the highest concentration of old Garnacha vines left in Spain.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
