Viosinho
Viosinho is often referred to as one of the "noble" white grape varieties of Portugal, quietly contributing to some of the country’s most prestigious white blends in the Douro Valley and beyond.
Varietal Origin: Viosinho is an ancient grape variety from Portugal, primarily found in the Douro Valley and Trás-os-Montes regions. Although it was historically underappreciated and sparsely planted, it has gained recognition for its role in high-quality white wines.
Typical Taste Profile: Wines made from Viosinho are often aromatic and expressive. The taste profile typically features tropical fruit such as mango and pineapple, alongside stone fruits like apricot. Viosinho wines also show good acidity, with additional floral notes and hints of herbs or spices. It strikes a balance between richness and freshness, making it versatile both as a blending grape and in single-varietal wines.
Regional Styles:
Douro Valley (Portugal): Viosinho is frequently blended with other indigenous grapes like Rabigato and Gouveio to produce complex, structured white wines. In these blends, Viosinho contributes richness and aromatic intensity. White wines from the Douro are known for their balance between freshness and body, and Viosinho is a key component in creating that balance.
Trás-os-Montes (Portugal): In this cooler, higher-altitude region, Viosinho exhibits more pronounced acidity and fresh floral notes, leading to lighter, more delicate wines. The grape is typically used in blends but can occasionally be found in single-varietal bottlings that emphasize its aromatic character and freshness.
