Vidiano
Often called “the white star of Crete”, Vidiano has risen from near obscurity to become one of Greece’s most exciting modern white grapes, prized for its balance of richness and freshness.
Varietal Origin: Vidiano is an indigenous Greek white grape native to Crete, particularly the Rethymno region. Long overlooked in favor of international varieties, it has been rediscovered over the past two decades and is now seen as a flagship variety for high-quality Cretan white wines.
Taste Profile: Vidiano typically produces medium- to full-bodied wines with a creamy texture balanced by vibrant acidity. Aromas and flavors include ripe stone fruits (peach, apricot), pear, citrus zest, and white flowers, often layered with herbal, saline, and mineral notes. With aging, it can develop hints of honey, nuts, and gentle spice.
Regional Styles:
Crete (PDO & PGI zones):
Unoaked styles: Emphasize freshness, aromatics, and Mediterranean herb notes.
Barrel-fermented or aged styles: Add texture, depth, and complexity, showcasing Vidiano’s ability to handle oak with finesse.
High-altitude vineyards: Produce more mineral-driven, taut expressions with excellent aging potential.
Vidiano is Crete’s modern classic—a white grape that combines Mediterranean warmth with surprising elegance and structure
