Teroldego
Often referred to as the "pride of Trentino," Teroldego is believed to be an ancient relative of Syrah, known for producing deep, intense red wines with strong local character.
Varietal Origin: Teroldego is indigenous to Trentino in Northern Italy, particularly thriving in the Campo Rotaliano plain. The grape has a long history in the region and is one of Italy’s lesser-known treasures, deeply rooted in the traditions of Trentino's winemaking.
Typical Taste Profile: Wines from Teroldego are generally full-bodied with rich dark fruit flavors such as blackberry, plum, and black cherry. These are often complemented by notes of spice, tobacco, earthy minerals, and sometimes a hint of violets. It has naturally high acidity and tannins, which contribute to its aging potential, but also maintains a surprising freshness and vibrancy in its youth.
Regional Styles
Trentino, Italy: In its native Trentino, particularly in the Campo Rotaliano DOC, Teroldego is celebrated for its rich, intense character. Winemakers here produce both fresh and fruity versions as well as more structured, age-worthy wines. It is often made in an unoaked style to highlight its bright fruit and minerality, but some producers use oak aging to add complexity and depth, resulting in more tannic, powerful wines.
Other Regions: Outside of Italy, it remains relatively rare but can be found in small quantities in California, where it is often crafted into ripe, fruit-forward wines. However, it never quite reaches the unique elegance and structure found in Trentino's cooler climate.
