Tardana
Tardana, also known as Planta Nova, is named for its late-ripening nature (the Spanish word "tarde" means "late"). It is one of the latest harvested white grape varieties in Spain, often picked well into October or even November.
2. Varietal Origin:
Tardana is native to the Valencia region of Spain, where it thrives in the Mediterranean climate. It is a traditional variety in this area and is valued for its resilience to heat and drought, making it suitable for the region's arid conditions.
3. Typical Taste Profile:
Tardana wines are typically light-bodied, with fresh citrus and stone fruit flavors like lemon, pear, and peach. The wines are known for their refreshing acidity and can exhibit subtle floral notes and a touch of minerality. When aged or vinified with skin contact, the wines can develop a richer texture and deeper complexity.
4. Regional Styles:
- Valencia, Spain: Tardana is primarily found in Valencia, where it is often used in white wine blends to add freshness and acidity. It is sometimes vinified as a single varietal, producing bright and crisp wines that reflect the Mediterranean terroir.
- Sparkling Wines: Due to its naturally high acidity, Tardana is also used in the production of sparkling wines in the region, where its freshness enhances the wine's vibrancy.
Tardana’s late harvest and high acidity make it a unique Spanish white variety that balances freshness with subtle complexity, perfect for enjoying in the warm Mediterranean sun
