Rubin
Rubin is a relatively modern grape variety, developed specifically to reflect the bold and structured style of Bulgarian red wines. Its crossbreeding heritage makes it a unique fusion of power and elegance.
Varietal Origin: Rubin is a cross between Nebbiolo and Syrah, developed in Bulgaria in the 1940s at the Viticulture and Enology Research Institute in Pleven. The goal was to create a grape that could thrive in Bulgaria’s diverse climate while combining the rich aromatic profile of Syrah with the structure and aging potential of Nebbiolo.
Typical Taste Profile: Rubin produces full-bodied wines with intense notes of blackberry, plum, and black cherry, complemented by hints of spice, violets, and subtle earthy undertones. With its firm tannins, high acidity, and deep ruby color, it has excellent aging potential. Oak aging often adds layers of vanilla, smoke, and chocolate to the wine.
Regional Styles:
Bulgaria: Rubin is widely planted in Bulgaria and often made into bold, single-varietal wines or blended with international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Thracian Valley is particularly noted for producing high-quality Rubin wines with ripe fruit flavors and spicy depth.
Other Regions: While it is primarily associated with Bulgaria, small plantings exist in nearby countries, though these are rare. Most Rubin wines are crafted to showcase the grape’s potential for creating structured and age-worthy reds.
Rubin is a testament to Bulgaria’s dedication to producing unique and high-quality wines, combining the best traits of two iconic grapes into a variety that thrives in its homeland
