Rich & Jammy Red Wines

Indulge in the deep embrace of rich, jammy red wines. Each sip delivers a delightful explosion of ripe fruit flavours, often layered with enticing hints of spice and soft tannins for a smooth, lingering finish.

Sweeter than average, these dry reds achieve their delightful profile through various winemaking techniques such as picking the grapes late to develop more natural sugars, or by softening tannins through malolactic fermentation and barrel choice.

Expect luscious fruit-driven notes of dark berries like blackberry and plum, intertwined with subtle floral hints and warm spice undertones for a deep, satisfying finish.

Our Favourite Sweet Reds

By Varietal

Zinfandel (Primitivo): This sweet red wine typically has juicy dark berry and stone fruit flavours like blackberry, strawberry, cherries, and peach, rounded out by lingering spices like pepper, cinnamon, and sweet tobacco. The warm Californian sun helps Zinfandel grapes achieve full ripeness and concentrated sugars, ensuring every sip packs a robust punch. It pairs wonderfully with barbecue or spicy dishes—think Korean grilled short ribs, grilled halloumi cheese, or curries.

By Origin

Châteauneuf-du-Pape & Southern Rhône (France): This region is favoured for its diverse grape varietals, warmer climates, and robust wines, so it’s no surprise that it excels at sweet reds. Wines from here often exhibit a touch of garrigue (herbal notes) and a subtle, complex sweetness that pairs best with stews or roasted game.

Barossa Valley (Australia): Renowned for its Shiraz, Barossa Valley’s sweet reds tend to have bold, jammy blackberry and plum flavours, often with hints of chocolate, mocha, and spice. The warm climate of the Valley allows Shiraz to reach optimal ripeness, resulting in concentrated fruit and potential for sweetness. These robust wines are fantastic with grilled meats or hearty pasta dishes, ideal for a luxuriant night in.

Are sweet red wines also dessert wines?

While some sweet red wines can certainly be enjoyed as dessert wines due to their noticeable sweetness, not all are exclusively categorised as such. The level of sweetness in sweet reds can vary, with some being more off-dry and others possessing a more pronounced sweetness suitable for pairing with desserts or turning into a wine cocktail. What’s the difference between a sweet red wine and a fruity red wine?

The key difference lies in the residual sugar content. Fruity red wines showcase prominent fruit flavors but are typically dry or have minimal residual sugar. Sweet red wines, on the other hand, have a clearly perceptible level of residual sugar, contributing to their distinct sweetness alongside the fruit characteristics.
