A near-extinct red grape, rescued by a priest who remembered seeing it in his family's home — rustic, original, and full of character.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Hondarrabi Beltza, from 5-year-old vines at 320 metres in Juanjo Tellaetxe's family plots in Artomaña, Arrastaria Valley, in the Arabako Txakolina DO, Basque Country, Spain. This red variety grows well in this drier area, where 60% of the valley was under vine in the mid-19th century — Tellaetxe remembers seeing it growing in his family home, and decided to bring it back. Hondarrabi Beltza is a true Basque Country variety, also found in isolated pockets of Navarre, Cantabria, and Castile and León — with very high natural acidity and high colour intensity, the grape produces wines tannic enough to feel "lusty" and somewhat raw, with excellent ageing potential
Taste Profile: Described by Guía Peñín as original, rustic, and minimally interventionist, with musky notes, smoky character, old leather, black fruit, and animal reductive notes. Hondarrabi Beltza typically shows an initial fruity aroma reminiscent of apple, with a light, salty note of sea tang, and violet-to-crimson-red colouration with good acid-to-fruit balance — on the finish, one is reminded of Beaujolais. A distinctive, characterful red that bears little resemblance to mainstream Spanish reds — a genuine taste of the Basque Country's near-forgotten viticultural heritage
Winemaking Process: A gentle pressing and spontaneous fermentation, aged for 5 months in stainless steel of 2,500L. Tellaetxe works with a tractor but harvests entirely by hand, mows the cover crop by hand, and applies only limited quantities of copper, sulphur, horsetail, and willow to his vines — yields are kept deliberately low, well under what's permitted in the appellation

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
