Lumière Ishigura Muscat Bailey A 2022
Aged in 1901 underground granite tanks that are now a protected piece of Japanese cultural heritage.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Muscat Bailey A, a hybrid of Muscat of Hamburg and the little-known Bailey crossing, grown on Lumière's alluvial, decomposed-granite vineyards in Yamanashi — Japan's foremost wine region, farmed with grass cover crops and no-tillage.
Taste Profile: Ruby red, with pleasant strawberry and pickled ginger aromas on the nose. The palate has an elegant structure and soft tannin, with red fruit and vanilla notes over a jammy body — light and easy-drinking, true to one of Japan's most popular wine grapes.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are hand harvested, then hand-sorted and gently fed into the destemmer. A gravity-flow system moves the wine from fermentation tank to ageing vessel without mechanical pumps. The wine then ages in Ishigura — underground granite stone fermentation tanks built in 1901, each holding roughly 10,000 litres, officially certified as a tangible cultural property of Japan in 1998 and part of a UNESCO-recognised cultural heritage designation since 2018. The process still relies on handcrafted bamboo drainboards and manual labour to drain the finished wine from the stone storehouse.
Winemaker: Lumière was founded in 1885 by Tokugi Furuya, a former samurai, making it Japan's oldest family-run winery, now in its fifth generation. The Ishigura tanks — ten of them, connected by an underground passage — remain one of the estate's defining features, a rare piece of working wine history that Lumière still uses rather than simply preserves.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
