Prensal (Premsal Blanc, Moll)
Prensal is one of the most traditional grape varieties of Mallorca, and it plays a key role in the island's revitalized winemaking scene, often being blended with other local varieties to create balanced and fresh wines.
Varietal Origin: Prensal, also known as Premsal Blanc or Moll, is native to the Spanish island of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. It has been grown on the island for centuries and is deeply linked to the local viticultural history. The grape has adapted well to Mallorca’s Mediterranean climate, making it a signature white varietal of the region.
Typical Taste Profile: Wines made from Prensal tend to be light to medium-bodied and have a delicate profile. They are often characterized by fresh citrus and green apple flavors, along with hints of almonds, subtle herbal notes, and a pleasant minerality. The wines also have good acidity, which helps retain their freshness, making them particularly suitable for warm climates.
Regional Styles:
Mallorca, Spain: Prensal is commonly grown in the DO regions of Binissalem and Pla i Llevant on the island. Winemakers often use it in blends with other local varieties such as Callet or Manto Negro, creating both fresh, easy-drinking wines and more complex, age-worthy whites. The pure varietal expression is known for its crispness, aromatic finesse, and balance, reflecting the island’s Mediterranean terroir.
Blended Wines: Prensal is often blended with international varieties like Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc to add complexity and roundness, but its role as the backbone of many Mallorcan white blends keeps its unique character intact.
