Pignoletto
Pignoletto is often referred to as “the Prosecco of Emilia-Romagna”, but it has a distinct identity with a crisper, more floral character. The name "Pignoletto" comes from "Pignuleti," meaning small pinecone, due to the shape of its grape clusters.
Varietal Origin: Pignoletto is an ancient Italian white grape variety primarily grown in Emilia-Romagna, particularly in the Colli Bolognesi region. It is genetically linked to Grechetto, a variety found in Umbria, though it has evolved into its own unique expression in Emilia-Romagna.
Typical Taste Profile: Pignoletto wines are light-bodied, fresh, and aromatic, offering notes of green apple, pear, citrus zest, white flowers, and almond. The wines are known for their crisp acidity and subtle mineral backbone, with some versions having a slight frizzante (light sparkle), making them extra refreshing.
Regional Styles:
Colli Bolognesi Pignoletto DOCG: The highest-quality expression, producing structured, still white wines with great freshness and minerality.
Pignoletto DOC (Emilia-Romagna & Umbria): Can be found in still, frizzante, and spumante styles, with the sparkling versions being the most popular.
Pignoletto Frizzante: A lightly sparkling style, often compared to Prosecco but with a more delicate floral and herbal touch.
