A castle traded for paintings, replanted by an artist, and now making some of Montalcino's finest Sangiovese.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Sangiovese, grown on the slopes of Montalcino, Italy, a classic example of the renowned Brunello di Montalcino DOCG.
Taste Profile: A deep ruby red colour with a complex aroma of red berries, black cherry, leather, tobacco and spices. Full-bodied on the palate, with a firm structure and silky tannins leading to a long, persistent finish.
Winemaking Process: Made using traditional winemaking techniques, including a long maceration period and ageing in French oak barrels for 24 months, allowing the wine to develop depth and complexity from Montalcino's ideal combination of climate and soil.
Winemaker: Castello Romitorio's story began in 1984, when contemporary artist Sandro Chia — a pioneer of Italy's Transavanguardia movement — acquired the then-abandoned castle from art patron Giorgio Franchetti in exchange for paintings, and began replanting its vineyards with Sangiovese. His son Filippo Chia took over in 2006, building a new cellar and expanding the estate, working alongside cellar master Stefano Martini, continuing a partnership between the two families that began with Stefano's father Franco.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
