Catherine Marshall Chenin Blanc Fermented in Clay 2023
Old-world clay amphorae meet the Western Cape's most planted white grape, sourced from two very different soils.
Grape Varietals & Region: Grapes are selected from a single vineyard in Elgin, South Africa grown on red laterite soil, locally called "koffieklip" or coffee stone for its resemblance to ground coffee, with vines vertically shoot-positioned on south to south-east facing rows for even budburst and ripening. A smaller portion comes from old bush vines on lighter soils in Stellenbosch's Bottelary Hills, contributing fleshy nectarine and richness to the mid-palate. Harvest took place in early March at vine ripeness.
Taste Profile: Broad layers of ripe pears, fresh stone fruit and white flowers sit on a canvas of flinty, wet stone that shapes the wine's texture. Approachable young, with fresh, bright aromatics, and capable of ageing up to 8 years — primary notes of white pear and fresh nectarine may evolve toward almond paste, baked apple and spicy cardamom over time.
Winemaking Process: Clusters and berries are sorted, then partially crushed before pressing in a pneumatic bag press, with both free-run and pressed juice treated oxidatively and with minimal chemical additives. The juice settles cold in stainless steel for two days, then is decanted into clay amphorae for spontaneous fermentation; 800L is later moved to French oak casks for further maturation, where it partially undergoes malolactic fermentation for nine months, while the amphora portion skips malolactic entirely to preserve its fresher, flintier character. The two components are blended and bottled after nine months.
Winemaker: Cathy Marshall trained at Elsenburg College and worked vintages in California, Oregon and Burgundy before founding what was then called the Barefoot Wine Company in 1997 — one of the first true boutique micro-wineries in the Western Cape, inspired, as the story goes, by three barrels of excellent Syrah made after a post-harvest foot-crushing celebration. In 2007 she moved to sourcing exclusively from the cool climate of Elgin and renamed the label after herself, becoming the first woman in South Africa to release an eponymous range and helping formalise the country's low-tech, hands-on "garagiste" winemaking movement.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
