Negoska
Negoska is best known as the softening partner to Xinomavro in northern Greece, adding fruit, roundness, and approachability to one of Europe’s most tannic and austere grape varieties.
Varietal Origin: Negoska is an indigenous Greek red grape from northern Greece, particularly the Naoussa appellation in Macedonia. It has long been cultivated alongside Xinomavro and is traditionally used in blends, though old-vine plantings are increasingly being bottled on their own.
Taste Profile: Negoska produces medium-bodied wines with lower tannins and riper fruit than Xinomavro. Expect flavors of black cherry, ripe strawberry, plum, and blackberry, supported by subtle notes of sweet spice, dried herbs, and earth. Acidity is moderate, giving the wine a smooth, generous mouthfeel.
Regional Styles:
Naoussa PDO: Commonly blended with Xinomavro to soften structure and enhance fruit expression, resulting in more balanced, early-drinking reds.
Single-varietal expressions (rare): Made from old vines, these wines highlight Negoska’s juicy, fruit-forward character with gentle spice and minimal oak influence.
Negoska may live in Xinomavro’s shadow, but on its own, it reveals a warm, expressive side of Greek red wine
