Maturana (Castets, Maturana Tinta de Navarrete)
Maturana is an ancient, almost-forgotten Spanish red grape variety that has been revived in Rioja. It’s celebrated for its resistance to disease and its ability to add unique character and freshness to modern Rioja wines.
Varietal Origin: Maturana originates from Spain, specifically in the Rioja region, where it has been recognized as an authorized variety under the DOCa regulations. It is also known as Castets in France, where it was historically grown in Bordeaux before falling into obscurity. By lineage, it is a cousin of Cabernet Franc
Typical Taste Profile: Maturana produces medium to full-bodied wines with dark berry flavors like blackberry and blackcurrant, often accompanied by notes of herbs, spices, and a distinct earthy minerality. The wines typically show vibrant acidity and structured tannins, making them age-worthy and suitable for blending or single-varietal expressions.
Regional Styles:
Rioja, Spain: Maturana Tinta de Navarrete was originally planted in Navarrete, within Rioja. It is vinified both as a single varietal and blended with traditional Rioja grapes like Tempranillo. Single-varietal wines often emphasize its vibrant acidity and herbaceous character, while blends benefit from its depth and complexity.
France (as Castets): Though rare, it historically contributed to Bordeaux blends, providing structure and freshness, though its use has diminished significantly over the years.
Maturana stands out as a testament to the importance of preserving heritage grape varieties, offering wine lovers a chance to experience unique and characterful wines with historical roots
