Madrid
The Madrid wine region, known as Vinos de Madrid DO, is an up-and-coming Spanish appellation producing diverse wines from high-altitude vineyards, with Garnacha and Albillo Real as standout varietals.
Regional History & Terroir: Wine production in the Madrid area dates back to Roman times, but the region gained official Denominación de Origen (DO) status in 1990. Located in central Spain, the Vinos de Madrid DO covers three subzones—San Martín, Navalcarnero, and Arganda—each with distinct soils and microclimates. Vineyards are planted at elevations ranging from 500 to over 800 meters, which helps moderate the hot, dry continental climate. Soils vary from sandy and granitic in the higher elevations to clay-limestone in lower areas, contributing to the complexity of the wines.
Typical Grape Varietals: The dominant red grape is Garnacha, particularly from the San Martín subzone, where old-vine plantings produce expressive, elegant wines. Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino, is also widely grown, along with Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Among white varieties, Albillo Real is a key indigenous grape, producing aromatic and textured wines, while Malvar and Airén contribute to crisp, fresh whites.
Regional Wine Styles: Madrid’s wines are gaining recognition for their balance of intensity and freshness. Garnacha-based reds are vibrant and fruit-forward, often with floral and spicy notes, while Tempranillo blends offer deeper structure. Albillo Real wines are aromatic, with stone fruit and herbal nuances, and some producers are experimenting with skin-contact styles. The region also produces traditional method sparkling wines and sweet wines, adding to its diversity.
With its unique high-altitude terroir, historic vineyards, and growing reputation for high-quality Garnacha and Albillo Real, Madrid is emerging as an exciting Spanish wine destination well worth exploring
