Hidden Bench "Estate" Pinot Noir 2018
Founded by an audiovisual industry veteran who bought his first vineyard the same year he founded the winery — then bought two more within four years.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% estate-grown Pinot Noir from the Locust Lane, Felseck and Rosomel vineyards in the Beamsville Bench VQA, Ontario.
Taste Profile: Pouring a brilliant garnet, the nose leads with aromas of sour cherry concentrate, umeboshi plum, purple violets and earthy forest floor. The palate is clean and fresh with sappy summer red berry fruit, cinnamon hearts, brown mushroom and savoury tomato leaf — a beautiful balance of fruit, spice and savoury character, finishing clean with classic Bench minerality.
Winemaking Process: Fermentation started naturally with indigenous yeasts, and the caps were gently submerged twice daily during fermentation. At the end of fermentation, the free-run wine was drained and settled in tank before barrelling down by gravity or transferring to concrete tanks; the skins were gently pressed in a traditional basket press. The wines were racked from barrel and concrete tank to be blended in early August 2022, then settled and stored in stainless steel prior to bottling, unfined and unfiltered to capture their purity — 89% French oak (22% new, 13% second fill, 16% third fill, 38% neutral) for 10 months, with the remaining 11% aged in concrete.
Winemaker: Hidden Bench was founded in 2003 by Harald Thiel, who moved into wine after a career in the audiovisual industry. He purchased the Locust Lane vineyard the same year he founded the estate, followed by Rosomel in 2004 and Felseck in 2007 — all three organically farmed, and all three feeding this Pinot Noir. The winery's whole approach is non-interventionist and terroir-first, built entirely around estate fruit rather than purchased grapes.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
