Oxer "Kalamity" Tinto DO Rioja 2022
Named for a Shakespeare quote and blended from two century-old vineyards, Kalamity is Oxer's boldest, longest-ageing red.
Grape Varietals & Region: 48% Tempranillo, 48% Garnacha, 2% Viura and 2% Garnacha Blanca, sourced from two plots: a 3-hectare vineyard in Cárdenas (Rioja Alta) planted in 1903 on iron-rich clay at 580m, and a 1-hectare, 101-year-old vineyard in Elvillar (Rioja Alavesa) on calcareous clay at 600m — old vines from both of Rioja's cooler, higher subzones.
Taste Profile: Bold and long, with soft black forest fruit, animal notes, violet florals and spice on the nose. The full-bodied palate delivers black cherry, blackberry and raspberry before revealing a mineral backbone and hints of pink pepper. Built to keep developing — hold to 2030 and beyond.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are selected plot by plot and vinified separately in open vats, barrels and concrete eggs using only indigenous yeasts, then aged 12 months in 500-litre French oak barrels and foudre.
Winemaker: Oxer Bastegieta got into wine almost by accident in 1999, when his father asked him to make a txakoli for the family restaurant in Kortezubi, Bizkaia. A master's in viticulture and oenology in Laguardia introduced him to Rioja Alavesa, and he moved there in 2009, buying his first old-vine plot the following year. Without family winemaking heritage behind him, he's since built an estate spanning Basque Txakoli and Rioja across 16 small plots, of which Kalamity — named and labelled after his love of Shakespeare — is the most ambitious.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
