Vega Sicilia's winemaker for 30 years finally started his own project in tribute to his father, deliberately outside the famous DO next door.
Grape Varietals & Region: 90% Tempranillo and 10% other varieties, from the Tudela de Duero and Traspinedo vineyards in Castilla y León, Spain. Although the fruit grows right alongside Ribera del Duero, Mauro bottles as Castilla y León by choice rather than seeking the DO's stamp — a statement of independence from a winemaker who already knew the region's rules better than almost anyone.
Taste Profile: "Mauro" is the winery's flagship wine: an elegant bouquet of fresh red berries and black fruit with balsamic and spicy nuances. The medium-to-full-bodied palate is dry, with precise yet powerful tannins and a magnificent fresh feel. Savoury ripe red and black fruit carries hints of wet earth, black truffle, liquorice and mineral undertones, closing on a very long finish.
Winemaking Process: Bottled in April 2021 after 15 months of ageing across barrels and vats of French and American oak of varying ages.
Winemaker: Mariano García was born at Vega Sicilia, where his father, grandfather and great-grandfather had all worked before him, and spent 1968 to 1998 as that estate's winemaker — producing many of Unico's legendary vintages along the way. In 1980 he founded Bodegas Mauro in Tudela de Duero as a personal project in homage to his father, built on the same instinct for oak ageing that made his name at Vega Sicilia. His sons Alberto and Eduardo now run the winery, with Alberto handling management and sales and Eduardo overseeing winemaking and the vineyards.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
