An Alentejo estate that survived its founder fleeing to Brazil mid-revolution — and came back to become one of Portugal's largest vineyards.
Grape Varietals & Region: Antão Vaz, Arinto and Roupeiro from vines averaging 20 years old, grown on granite and schist with a loam-clay structure in Reguengos de Monsaraz, in the heart of Portugal's Alentejo. The estate has a dramatic backstory: banker José Roquette and agronomist Joaquim Bandeira bought Herdade do Esporão in 1973, only for Roquette to flee to Brazil months later when Portugal's 1974 Carnation Revolution made a wealthy banker's position distinctly uncomfortable. The estate sat abandoned until Roquette returned in 1979 to rebuild it — it's now grown into one of Portugal's largest wine estates, at over 400 hectares.
Taste Profile: Crystal clear, light straw colour with green hues. Grapefruit and white peach aromas with subtle toasty oak integration, fresh spicy and herbal notes. Creamy and elegant, with balanced fruit and spice, finishing intense and persistent.
Winemaking Process: Destemming, cold settling, skin maceration, pressing and must decantation, followed by temperature-controlled fermentation split between stainless steel tanks and new American and French oak barrels. Six months of ageing follows in the same combination of tank and barrel, resting on fine lees throughout.
Winemaker: David Baverstock, an Australian winemaker from the Barossa Valley, was appointed to Esporão in 1992 and spent close to three decades building the modern winery — bringing New World tools like stainless steel and temperature control to distinctly Old World Portuguese grapes. His nearly 30-year run is widely credited with putting Esporão at the forefront of modern Alentejo winemaking. Since his retirement, that same rigour has continued under winemaker José Luís Moreira da Silva, who joined the estate in 2015 and took over leading production in 2022.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
