Aphros "Melissae" Loureiro Vinho Verde 2019
Named after the honey nymphs of Greek myth — and grown on the one plot at Aphros that doubles as home to the estate's actual bees.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Loureiro from the highest plot on Quinta de Aphros, a certified biodynamic estate in the Lima sub-region of Vinho Verde, northern Portugal — one of the cooler, more Atlantic-facing corners of the appellation, and the reason Loureiro grown here tends toward perfume and precision rather than the neutral, spritzy style Vinho Verde is often reduced to. The grapes come from the same plot as the estate's beehives, which is where Melissae gets its name.
Taste Profile: Aphros Melissae lives off a wonderful herbal intensity — lemon thyme, mint and lemon balm, with chamomile the clear star of the sensory ensemble. A touch of acacia honey and orange blossom adds balsamic, floral accents. The skin contact leaves a spirited texture, yet it's far from wild or tannic — just a little fuller, closer to a good flavoured green tea than a typical Vinho Verde. Discreetly bitter chamomile nuances come through beautifully on the finish, and the whole thing stays light on its feet.
Winemaking Process: Hand-harvested and partially destemmed, with a portion of the fruit given brief skin contact — whole bunch, in stainless steel, alongside must from the same plot — before pressing. The wine then spends three months ageing sur lie in concrete eggs and is bottled unfiltered, a combination that gives it its fuller, slightly textured feel without tipping into anything wild.
Winemaker: Vasco Croft took over his mother's semi-abandoned, 17th-century family estate in Portugal's Lima Valley in 2003 and began converting it to biodynamics in 2006. He's now regarded as one of Portugal's pioneering biodynamic winemakers, producing around 15 wines across the property — Melissae among the most distinctive, built as much around the estate's bees as its vines.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
