Oxer "Tartalo" DO Rioja 2019
Named after a one-eyed giant from Basque mythology, Tartalo is built from century-old, low-yielding vines that give it genuine staying power.
Grape Varietals & Region: 87% Tempranillo, 10% Viura and 3% Graciano, from Somo, a 0.7-hectare vineyard in Elvillar (Rioja Alavesa) planted in 1920. The low-yielding, high-altitude vines (600m) grow in calcareous clay soil with a high limestone content.
Taste Profile: Notable structure and elegant flavour: black cherry, bramble and black plum fruit interlaced with rustic leather, thyme and sweet spice. Pronounced yet velvety tannins close in an enormously long, chalky finish. A back-label quote from Edvard Munch — "From my rotting body flowers shall grow and I am in them and that is eternity" — hints at the wine's brooding character.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are hand-picked and destemmed, then fermented in a 1,000-litre open vat and barrels using indigenous yeast. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French barriques and 600-litre Stockinger barrels, followed by 12 months' ageing in oak.
Winemaker: Oxer Bastegieta bought this Elvillar vineyard, one of his first in Rioja Alavesa, drawn to its century-old low-yielding vines and calcareous clay. Working without formal winemaking heritage but with an obvious taste for the theatrical — Tartalo takes its name from Basque mythology's one-eyed giant — he treats each old plot as its own singular wine rather than folding it into a house blend.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
