Naudé Old Vines Colombard Langpad 2022
A once-overlooked blending grape, planted in 1983 on pure Atlantic sand, turned into something that ages for a decade.
Grape Varietals & Region: 100% Colombard, from a single old-vine vineyard called Langpad, planted in 1983 in the Vredendal area on South Africa's West Coast — the far northern edge of coastal Swartland, about 35km from the ocean. The vineyard sits on 100% sand soil with flood irrigation, and a daily coastal mist rolls in reliably enough that the growers can set their clocks to it. Colombard arrived in South Africa in the 1920s and has long been treated mainly as a blending grape or brandy base — but on old vines like these, planted in the right sandy, misty spot, it becomes something else: a genuine mirror of its terroir.
Taste Profile: White peach and passionfruit open the nose, followed by pear and peach. It finishes with a saline, salty freshness. Beautifully balanced and precise, true to its origins, with a classical fine, linear textural focus and a bright, bristling, prominent acidity. The long, saline finish has real ageing potential — expect this wine to reward 10+ years in the cellar.
Winemaking Process: Grapes are picked into small crates and go straight from the truck into whole-bunch pressing. Natural fermentation begins after about three days, and the wine is then kept on the lees for as long as possible, where the complex flavours and texture develop. With nature having already done most of the work, the winemaking stays deliberately hands-off, with minimal interference.
Winemaker: Naudé Wines is the personal négociant project of Ian Naudé, one of South Africa's most respected old-vine specialists, who spent eleven years as winemaker at Adoro Wines before launching his own label in 2018. He sources hand-selected old-vine parcels — like this Colombard from Vredendal — across the Swartland, Stellenbosch and West Coast, and puts it simply: "I believe that old vineyards have their own story to tell, and Colombard is no exception. My job is to bottle that story."

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
