The second wine of a Super Tuscan icon, from the estate an Antinori built on marshy coastland his mother left him.
Grape Varietals & Region: An elegant blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Franc and 17% Petit Verdot, from Ornellaia's Bolgheri, Tuscany estate. The 2022 growing season brought a return to more normal climatic conditions after a run of mild winters, with a very wet spring, a warm dry July, and a warm but slightly wetter August than the year before; the red harvest ran from the 31st of August with Merlot through to the 8th of October with the later-ripening varieties.
Taste Profile: A lively ruby red colour, with great aromatic complexity — berries, blackberry, raspberry and red cherry in the glass, joined by floral hints of wild rose and spicy notes of pink pepper and liquorice. A good tannic structure on tasting, enveloping and balanced, with a crisp, savoury finish.
Winemaking Process: Clusters are hand-picked into 15kg boxes, then selected by hand on a double sorting table both before and after destemming, and gently crushed. Each variety and parcel ferments separately in stainless steel at 26–30°C for two weeks, followed by 10–15 days of maceration. Malolactic fermentation starts in stainless steel and finishes after transfer to barrels — 25% new, 75% one year old. The wine remains in Ornellaia's temperature-controlled cellar for a further 15 months, assembled after the first 12 and returned to barrel for 3 more, then aged an additional six months in bottle before release.
Winemaker: Tenuta dell'Ornellaia was founded in 1981 by Marquis Lodovico Antinori, younger brother of Piero Antinori of Tignanello fame, on marshy Maremma coastland he inherited from his mother. Eschewing native Sangiovese for Bordeaux varieties, Antinori planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and released the first Ornellaia vintage in 1985, building one of the defining estates of the Super Tuscan movement before eventually moving on to other projects.

We hate the disappointment of opening an off-drinking bottle of wine – as much as a kid seeing their scoop of ice cream fall to the ground (Yes, it hurts).
Simply contact us within 7 days of receiving your wines to let us know why you’re not satisfied and drop off the remaining unused wines back to us. The bottle will have to be at least 3/4 full and the same wine the bottle is in (duh).
Once we verify that the the wine was corked or damaged, we will process the refund.
